Texas Tech Homecoming Is Bringing a Free Goo Goo Dolls and Bowling for Soup Concert to Lubbock |
The October 16 concert anchors a Homecoming weekend that includes the parade, bonfire and an October 17 football matchup with Arizona State. |

Texas Tech Homecoming has always been about more than the football game.
This year, that may be especially true.
The university has announced a free Homecoming concert featuring Goo Goo Dolls and Bowling for Soup on Friday, October 16, at Urbanovsky Park — part of an evening that also includes the traditional pep rally and bonfire.
For Lubbock residents who are not students or season-ticket holders, it creates a rare opportunity to experience one of Texas Tech’s biggest weekends without purchasing a concert ticket.
Friday Night Will Be the Centerpiece
Homecoming Friday begins with the Rowdy Raider Rally and presentation of the Homecoming Court at 11:30 a.m. at the Student Union North Plaza.
The traditional Homecoming Parade begins at 6 p.m., traveling from Avenue V and Broadway through the main entrance of campus.
Then attention shifts to Urbanovsky Park.
The pep rally, bonfire and concert begin at 7:30 p.m., with Goo Goo Dolls and Bowling for Soup scheduled to perform. The concert itself is free, and tickets are not required. Gates open at 6 p.m.
For anyone who grew up in the 1990s or early 2000s, the lineup will be familiar.
Goo Goo Dolls built a catalog around songs including Iris, Slide, Black Balloon and Better Days. Texas-born Bowling for Soup became a pop-punk staple with songs including 1985, Girl All the Bad Guys Want, Punk Rock 101 and High School Never Ends.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Although admission is free, Texas Tech is treating the event like a major concert.
Security screening will be required. A clear-bag policy will be in effect, generally limiting guests to approved clear bags no larger than 12-by-6-by-12 inches, one-gallon clear freezer bags or small clutch bags. Chairs and strollers are permitted but must go through security screening.
Outside food and drinks, alcohol, weapons, fireworks, coolers, smoking and vaping are prohibited.
Food trucks will operate inside the concert area.
Public parking near the concert is scheduled to become available after 5:30 p.m. in several commuter and residential lots around United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech cautions that vehicles parked in those areas earlier may be subject to citation. ADA parking will be available in R-37 west of the arena.

Then Comes Saturday
Homecoming continues October 17 with Raidergate and Texas Tech football.
No. 10 Texas Tech hosts Arizona State at Galaxy Stadium on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff at 2:30 p.m. Central and a national television broadcast on FOX. Fans can also find viewing options through the FOX Sports app.
Why This Matchup Matters
This is a meeting of the two most recent Big 12 champions: Arizona State won the conference in 2024, and Texas Tech followed in 2025. The Red Raiders enter 5–0 overall and 2–0 in conference play; the Sun Devils are 3–2 and 1–1.
There is a rematch storyline, too. Arizona State beat Tech 26–22 in Tempe last season, handing the Red Raiders their only regular-season loss. The all-time series is tied 3–3.
For Tech, a victory would mean another 6–0 start and a 12th consecutive home win. For Arizona State, it is a chance to beat a top-10 opponent on the road and strengthen its position in the Big 12 race.
Texas Tech has announced the game is sold out. Fans attending should download their digital tickets to a mobile wallet before arriving.

A Homecoming That Extends Beyond Campus
There is an economic side to Homecoming as well.
Thousands of alumni, parents and visitors arriving in Lubbock means more restaurant tables filled, hotel rooms occupied and customers moving through local businesses.
But perhaps the better way to look at the weekend is simpler.
Texas Tech is one of the institutions that defines Lubbock to the rest of the country. Homecoming offers local residents — whether they earned a degree there or never attended a single class — a chance to step onto campus and participate in some of the traditions that connect the university and the city.
And this year, you can add a major outdoor concert to the list. |
